September 11 commemoration ceremonies begin in US to mark 20th anniversary - ABC News

Ceremonies commemorating the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States are being held in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

A moment of silence at 8:46am local time (10:46pm AEST) began the program in New York City, marking the exact time when American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Americans are honouring the nearly 3,000 lives lost, while reflecting on how the attacks shaped the country's view of the world and itself.

US President Joe Biden is scheduled to travel to all three sites of the attacks.

Former president George W Bush is expected to speak at the Pennsylvania memorial.

The anniversary takes place just weeks after the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the return to power of the Taliban.

The Taliban is the faction that sheltered the Muslim militant group founded by Osama bin Laden that carried out the attacks.
