Gabby Petito’s best friend says Brian Laundrie is capable of surviving in wilderness - 7NEWS

Gabby Petito’s best friend says the 22-year-old’s missing fiance, Brian Laundrie, is capable of surviving on his own in the wilderness.

The couple had been travelling cross-country in a converted van when Gabby stopped making contact with her family in late August. Concerned, they raised the alarm on September 11.

Unbeknownst to them, police say Laundrie, 23, had driven the van back to his parent’s home in Florida, alone, on September 1.

Gabby’s remains were discovered by law enforcement agents in an undeveloped camping area within the Bridger-Teton National Forest earlier this month. The coroner has determined her manner of death as homicide.

Laundrie was identified by the FBI as a “person of interest” in her disappearance, but he hasn’t been seen or heard from since September 14 when his parents say he left home with a backpack.

Former FBI special agent and Professor of Criminology Bryanna Fox told NBC there was a chance he was still alive and in hiding, getting help from someone he’s close to.

Authorities had also considered the possibility ha has taken his own life.

But Petito’s best friend, Rose Davis, believes otherwise.

“He is out in the wilderness, I promise you,” Davis told PEOPLE, “he’s out there. He is.”

“If he’s alive, he’s out there, camping out ... He lived in the Appalachians by himself for months.”

Davis - who became friends with Laundrie through her friendship with Petito - also suspects he is on the run and isn’t being assisted.

“He does not have friends,” she added. “He reads books.”

She said the situation was “horrific” and she’s at “a loss for words”.

“I’ve stayed at their house. I’ve slept in the same house as him. I ate dinners with him, played board games with him, gone to the beach ... that’s scary.”

Search continues

The search for Laundrie is continuing in the Carlton Reserve, more than 15,000 inhospitable hectares of swampland, alligators and snakes in Sarasota County, Florida, not far from the home Laundrie and Petito shared with his parents.

Authorities have repeatedly underscored the difficulty of searching the area, with North Port Police saying in an update last week that the nature reserve was “vast and unforgiving,” with many areas that had been flooded or where the water was waist-deep.

Federal and local officials from multiple agencies have combed the reserve for signs of Laundrie, using drones and bloodhounds as part of the search. An underwater dive team was also brought in midweek.

“We’re looking through wooded areas, we’re looking through bodies of water, we’re looking through swampy areas,” North Port Police Commander Joe Fussell said on Friday.

“And we’re deploying the resources to be able to do that. We have air units, we have drones, we have the swamp buggies, air boats, multiple law enforcement agencies, we have ATVs, we have UTVs and we have officers on foot as well.”
