US Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died of natural causes after pro-Trump riots, examiner concludes - ABC News

Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick had two strokes and died of natural causes after he tussled with a mob of former president Donald Trump's supporters, the District of Columbia's chief medical examiner has ruled.

The medical examiner's office said on Monday (local time) that the 42-year-old officer died of natural causes the day after the January 6 violence at the US Capitol.

He suffered a stroke.

Authorities initially believed Mr Sicknick died from head injuries sustained while "physically engaging" with pro-Trump rioters who stormed the complex to disrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's presidential election win.

But by March, investigators revised that theory, and said additional information had led them to believe the officer may have ingested a chemical substance, such as bear spray, that contributed to his death.

The new findings mean it will be hard for federal prosecutors to bring homicide charges in connection with Mr Sicknick's death.

Two men — George Tanios and Julian Khater — are facing charges they assaulted three police officers, including Mr Sicknick, by spraying them with a chemical irritant on January 6.

The arrests are the closest federal prosecutors have come to identifying and charging anyone associated with the deaths that happened during and after the riot.

Five people died, including a woman who was shot by a police officer inside the Capitol.

But many rioters are facing charges of injuring police officers, who were attacked with bats, sprayed with irritants, punched and kicked, and rammed with metal gates meant to keep the insurrectionists from the Capitol.

Mr Sicknick and other officers were standing guard behind metal bicycle racks as the mob descended on the Capitol on January 6.
