Live breaking news: Vaccine 'very safe' says Australia's top doctor; Australia asks for immediate advice on AstraZeneca vaccine after EU finds possible blood clot link; First international arrivals for months land in Victoria - 9News

Australia's Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly has emphasised the AstraZeneca vaccine is "extremely effective" and in most cases, "very safe" despite blood clot concerns.

The country's vaccine regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has been meeting to discuss and review the vaccine.

"The issue is that this is an extremely rare event," Professor Kelly told Today.

"We are talking about four in a million, around that, but it is a serious event. So this is the system of post-market evaluation and following up of vaccines once they are in the real world.

"We start to see these rare events, we take action. That is what we'll be doing today."

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) will meet today to provide advice for the Australian Government.

Professor Kelly said safety was the government's "first priority" always.
