How Buckingham Palace broke the news of Prince Philip's death — and how world leaders reacted - ABC News

Prince Philip's death at the age of 99 has sent a wave of mourning around the world, with leaders from Scott Morrison to Narendra Modi paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.

But it started with a black-clad website and a four-line statement from Buckingham Palace, published at midday local time, or 9:00pm on the east coast of Australia.

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," it said.

"Further announcements will be made in due course.

"The royal family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

The statement was sent to the press and circulated on the royal family's official social media accounts, while guards cloaked in black posted the notice to the gates of Buckingham Palace.

Leading the way in Australia was Governor-General David Hurley, who broke the news as the monarch's representative here.

"This is a sad and historic day," the Governor-General said.

“As we mourn, we should also reflect and give thanks for His Royal Highness’ lifetime of service, devotion and commitment."

Here's how the world is reacting to the death of Prince Philip.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison followed General Hurley in paying tribute to Philip, noting his dedication to the crown.

"His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh was, in the words of Her Majesty, her ‘strength and stay’.

"Prince Philip was no stranger to Australia, having visited our country on more than 20 occasions.

"Through his service to the Commonwealth, he presided as patron or president of nearly 50 organisations in Australia. Given his own service, Prince Philip also had a strong connection with the Australian Defence Force."

The UK's Prime Minister Boris Johnson noted Philip's quiet dedication to his role as Queen's consort and his service in the Navy.

"Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world," he told waiting press outside Number 10 Downing Street.

"He was the longest-serving consort in history, one of the last surviving people in this country to have served in the Second World War.

"From that conflict, he took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented changes of the postwar era.

'May his soul rest in peace': Narendra Modi

In a statement issued from India, a former British colony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, shared world leaders' admiration for Philip's service.

"My thoughts are with the British people and the royal family on the passing away of HRH the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," he said.

"He had a distinguished career in the military and was at the forefront of many community service initiatives.

"May his soul rest in peace."

'Fondly remembered': Jacinda Ardern

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern issued a statement shortly after the Duke's passing, reflecting on the good he did via his encouragement of the country's youth.

“Prince Philip will be fondly remembered for the encouragement he gave to so many young New Zealanders through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award," she said.

"In over 50 years of the award in New Zealand, thousands of young people have completed life-changing challenges through the program.

“New Zealanders will also remember the Duke of Edinburgh's enormous support for Her Majesty the Queen.

"His time as royal consort exceeded that of any other royal consort in British history.  His Royal Highness accompanied the Queen on her 10 visits to New Zealand, the first being in 1953 and the last in 2002."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reflected on the personal loss the royal family was facing.

"A man of great service to others – first as a decorated naval officer and later as a dedicated leader in the areas of community engagement and philanthropy – the duke always sought out the best in people and challenged them to strive for greater heights," he said.

"Prince Philip was a man of great purpose and conviction, who was motivated by a sense of duty to others. He will be fondly remembered as a constant in the life of our Queen – a lifelong companion who was always at her side offering unfailing support as she carried out her duties.

"A family has lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. The thoughts of Canadians are with Queen Elizabeth II and the members of the royal family as they mourn such a significant loss."
