Driver, police officer dead after car rams US Capitol barricade - Sydney Morning Herald

By Matthew Knott

Washington: Two people are dead after a driver rammed into a barricade outside the US Capitol before lunging at police with a knife, law enforcement officials said.

The attacker was shot dead by police at the scene and a police officer was later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. Another police officer was wounded in the attack and taken to hospital.

The attack occurred less than three months after the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol, an event that resulted in five deaths including that of a police officer.

A tall barbed wire fence that was erected around the entire Capitol complex following the insurrection was dismantled only a month ago, as the threat level appeared to be subsiding.

Robert Contee, the Acting Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said the incident on Saturday (AEDT) did not appear to be terror related and that the suspect had not been known to police.

The Capitol went into lockdown after the incident, but the building was largely empty given Congress is not in session and the attack occurred on Good Friday local time.

Yogananda Pittman, the acting chief of the Capitol Police, said the attack occurred just after 1pm local time (4am AEDT).

Pittman said the suspect slammed into two officers stationed at a vehicle checkpoint on Constitution Avenue, on the north side of the Capitol complex. The checkpoint is about 90 metres from the entrance to the Senate side of the building.

The suspect then “exited the vehicle with knife in hand” and lunged toward police, she said.

The officers then opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The officer who died in the incident and the attacker have not been publicly identified.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-mast following the incident.

Video posted online showed a dark coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police K9 unit inspecting the vehicle.

President Joe Biden had just departed the White House for Camp David when the incident occurred. As customary, he was travelling with a member of the National Security Council Staff who was expected to brief him on the incident.
