UK press call for Meghan and Harry to be stripped of their titles -

The fallout from Harry and Meghan’s tell-all with Oprah has continued to make waves around the world, with the British press blowing up and calling for the couple’s titles to be stripped.

In their interview on Monday, the couple spoke extensively of the “constant barrage” of toxic and often racially motivated press they had faced from British tabloids from the moment they began dating, with Meghan revealing it took such a toll that she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore”.

“There was (a breaking point). I just didn’t see a solution. I would sit up at night and I just didn’t understand how all of this was churning out,” she said.

“And I realised that it was all happening just because I was breathing.”

The days since, however, show Meghan’s devastating confession didn’t get through to everyone – The Daily Mail’s front page this morning – a “Harry & Meghan fallout special” – led with results of a reader poll, declaring: “Now strip them of titles”.

The couple’s relationship with The Daily Mail has long been strained, with Meghan recently winning a lawsuit against the paper in the British High Court, after suing the publisher of the Mail on Sunday for breach of copyright and infringement of privacy.

In less damning coverage, the Daily Mirror, Daily Express and The Daily Telegraph focused on the Queen’s response to the interview.

After radio silence from Buckingham Palace, the monarch said in a short statement that “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members”.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the statement read.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

In their interview, Harry told Oprah that he had his “own relationship that goes back a long way with the media”.

“I asked for calm from the British tabloids once as a boyfriend, once as a husband, and then once as a father,” he said, adding that he wanted to keep his family safe “from this constant barrage”.

“My biggest concern was history repeating itself … and what I was seeing was history repeating itself, but far more dangerous because you add race in and social media in,” he said.

“I think the biggest turning point for me was (that) this union – us, me having a girlfriend – was going to be a thing.”

During an unseen clip, the Duke also said that the UK tabloid media is “bigoted” and creates a “toxic environment” of “control and fear”.

Shortly after the couple announced they would step back from royal duties, Harry said, someone who was “friends with a lot of the editors” had warned him about the couple’s confrontational stance with the press, telling him, “Please don’t do this with the media, they will destroy your life.”

“You need to understand that the UK is very bigoted,” the person told him, to which Harry responded, “The UK is not bigoted, the UK press is bigoted, specifically the tabloids.”

Speaking to Oprah, he added that “unfortunately, if the source of information is inherently corrupt or racist or biased then that filters out to the rest of society”.
