Key moments from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey - ABC News

In an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have given a behind the scenes account of their experience as royals and their decision to step away from the palace.

In the two-hour television special broadcast on American TV network CBS, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex addressed rumours surrounding the couple's relationship with members of the royal family.

They also shared their concern for Archie's security and how the pressure of royal life began to take a toll on Meghan.

The interview began with Meghan recalling how she met the Queen — including a tidbit about how she was asked if she knew how to curtsy — but the tone quickly changed as the duchess was asked about her royal life.

"It all changed after the Australia tour," Prince Harry revealed later in the interview.

"It was the first time the family got to see how incredible she was at the job. And that brought back memories."

The interview is certain to cause shockwaves through the palace and the British media, which are both singled out as the main reasons the couple decided to leave the UK and their roles as senior working royals.

Here are the key moments from the interview so far:

Meghan says there were 'conversations about how dark [Archie's] skin might be'

Meghan told Winfrey she was deeply hurt by the way her son Archie was treated by members of the royal family and palace aides.

While it was reported before Archie was born in 2019 that his parents did not want him to have a royal title or security, Meghan said those decisions were made for her.

"There's this convention … when you're the grandchild of the monarch, automatically Harry's child becomes prince or princess," she said.

"It's not their right to take it away. While I was pregnant they wanted to change the convention for Archie."

When asked by Winfrey if she thought those perks were being taken away because of Archie's race, Meghan made a big revelation:

Meghan: I can give you an honest answer. In those months when I was pregnant, we have in tandem the conversations about how he won't be given security, he's not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born.

Winfrey: Who is having that conversation with you? What?! Hold up, stop right now. There's a conversation about that?

Meghan: There were several conversations about that.

Winfrey: There's a conversation with you?

Meghan: With Harry.

Winfrey: About how dark your baby is going to be?

Meghan: Potentially, and what that would mean or look like.

Winfrey: You're not going to tell me who had the conversation?

Meghan: I think that would be very damaging to them ... that was relayed to me from Harry. Those were conversations that family had with him.

Prince Harry later told Winfrey he would never publicly reveal who discussed his child's skin tone with him, but says the conversation left him "a bit shocked".

Harry said the decision to step back as senior working royals was partly driven by the racism Meghan experienced.

"The family, they very much have this mentality of, 'this is just how it is, this is how it's meant to be,'" he said.

"But what was different for me was the race element. Because now it wasn't just about [Meghan], but what she represents, and therefore it wasn't just affecting my wife, it was affecting so many other people as well."

He also alluded to his fears that Meghan or Archie could suffer the same fate as Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash while being chased by photographers in 1997.

"My biggest concern was history repeating itself. And what I was seeing was history was repeating itself," he said.

The toll: 'I just didn't see a solution'

Meghan also revealed during the interview that things began to take their toll after her marriage in 2018.

"Yeah, there was [a breaking point]. I just didn't see a solution. I would sit up at night, and I was just like, I don't understand how this [the portrayal of her in the press] was being churned out," she said.

Meghan said that it got to a point where she knew she needed to tell Harry how she felt.

"I was really ashamed to say it at the time, and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry — especially because I knew how much loss he's suffered," she said.

"But I knew that if I didn't say it that I would do it, and I just didn't. I just didn't want to be alive anymore. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought."

The duchess said the next day she went to the palace to ask if she could go somewhere to get help but was told "it wouldn't be good for the institution".

She also discussed how hard it was to have that conversation take place and the next day be smiling for the cameras.

"There was this photo that someone had sent me. We had to go to this event at the Royal Albert Hall — and a friend said, 'I know you don't look at pictures but OMG you guys look so great'," she said.

"And she sent it to me and I zoomed in, and what I saw was the truth of what that moment was."

She said it had been taken after she had revealed to Prince Harry how she was feeling, and that he had advised her not to go with him to the event.

"And I said, 'I can't be left alone,'" she said.

Prince Harry later said he "went to all the places which I thought I should go to to ask for help".

Harry: We both did, separately and together.

Winfrey: So you left because you were asking for help but couldn't get it?

Harry: Yeah, basically.

Rumours: 'The reverse happened' in wedding incident with Kate

Earlier on in the interview, Meghan was asked about some of the rumours surrounding her and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge's relationship.

In particular, Meghan addressed the reports of an incident that happened before the wedding, where she was accused of making Kate cry.

"The narrative with Kate, which didn't happen, was really difficult. And that's when everything changed," Meghan told Winfrey.

"… I can see now what layers were at play there. Again they really seemed to want a narrative of a hero and a villain."

When asked what happened, Meghan said that she didn't make Kate cry and that "the reverse happened".

"I don't say that to be disparaging to anyone because it was a really hard week of the wedding," she said.

"And she was upset about something. But she owned it, and she apologised, and she brought me flowers, and a note apologising."

But she said what was shocking for her was that "seven months after our wedding, that the reverse of that came out".

Meghan didn't offer any more details about the conversation other than to confirm it was about flower girl dresses.

Meghan and Harry reveal they are having a girl... and had a secret wedding

In one of the lighter moments of the interview, Prince Harry told Winfrey that he felt grateful for the news that Meghan was having another baby and his first thought was "amazing".

"It's a girl," he revealed.

The couple told Winfrey that their daughter would complete their family, and they did not plan to have any more children.

Meghan and Harry also revealed that before their wedding, which was viewed around the world, the pair got married in a private ceremony with themselves and a celebrant a few days prior.

How they feel about the Royals now: 'I feel really let down'

Prince Harry also revealed that his family cut him off financially in the first few months of 2020.

He hit back at suggestions that he and Meghan were greedy by signing deals with Netflix and Spotify, which could earn them hundreds of millions of dollars.

"Netflix and Spotify weren't part of the plan. We didn't have a plan. That was suggested by someone else by the point where my family literally cut me off financially and I had to afford security for us," he said.

"But I've got what my mum left me and without that we would not have been able to do this."

He also suggested that perhaps his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales left him a large inheritance as escape money if he ever decided to step back from life as a senior royal.

"I think she saw it coming and I certainly felt her presence through this whole process," he said.

A year since he left the UK, Prince Harry said he was closer to the Queen than he had ever been.

"I've spoken to my grandmother more in the last year than I have in many, many years," he said.

He revealed they did Zoom calls so she could see Archie, and the Queen would always be his "colonel in chief".

Harry said there was a brief period where his father, Prince Charles, refused to take his phone calls, and there was still "a lot to work through there".

And while Harry said he loved Prince William "to bits", the brothers were now walking two very different paths.
