Coronavirus live updates: COVID-19 testing clinic in Ireland in busy parking lot, no social distancing - NEWS.com.au

“Sorry but what is this?” wrote Doug Leddin, alongside an image of the centre.

“A instant covid 19 centre? No social distancing measures, In a very busy public car park. With outdoor portaloo beside cars. Surely not the most hygienic/safest place for covid testing? Do they even have planning? Who is it? @HSELive @DonnellyStephen ? Odd.”

In a second tweet, he called on the CEO of the Health Service Executive, Paul Reid, to look into it.

“Seems extremely unusual and a very unsafe place to have people queue for potential covid positive results? I believe you know who is behind it,” Leddin wrote.

Other users commented that it “looks fairly mank” and “seems ludicrous”.

Meanwhile, nearly 200,000 more people are predicted to die of coronavirus in the United States by June, despite the rollout of vaccines expected to slow fatalities.

The virus death toll, which so far totals more than 455,000 American lives, is expected to reach 631,000 by mid-2021, according to a forecast from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

But despite the prediction of hundreds of thousands more fatalities from COVID-19, the IHME says daily deaths from coronavirus have peaked and will now be on the decline thanks to the availability of vaccines.

Digital "proof of vaccination" certificates will be stored and displayed on phone apps as part of the federal government's plans for the national coronavirus vaccine rollout.

The Express Plus Medicare app and MyGov accounts will both store digital proof-of-vaccination certificates, while those who require a hard copy will be able to access a printout from vaccine providers and Services Australia offices.

Cabinet approval for the scheme is due in the next two weeks, The Sun-Herald and The Age reported today.

An update to the Medicare app will also be developed as part of the plan, which aims to make proof of vaccine quick and easy to access.

It is expected the certificates will also be developed as part of the plan, which aims to make proof of vaccine quick and easy to access.

China’s drug authorities have given “conditional” approval for a second Covid-19 vaccine, Sinovac’s CoronaVac jab, the pharmaceutical company said on Saturday.
The vaccine has already been rolled out to key groups at higher risk of exposure to coronavirus but Saturday’s approval allows for its use on the general public.
A conditional approval helps hustle emergency drugs to market in cases when clinical trials are yet to meet normal standards but indicate therapies will work.

The approval comes after multiple domestic and overseas trials of the vaccine in countries including Brazil and Turkey, although “efficacy and safety results need to be further confirmed”, Sinovac said in a statement.
Fellow Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm received a similar conditional green light in December to put its vaccine on the market.
Sinovac said trials in Brazil had shown around 50 per cent efficacy in preventing infection and 80 per cent efficacy in preventing cases requiring medical intervention.
“The results show that the vaccine has good safety and immunogenic effect on people of all age groups,” Sinovac said on Saturday.
Meanwhile Sinopharm said in December that its vaccine had a 79.34 per cent efficacy rate, lower than rival jabs developed in the West by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna – with 95 and 94 per cent rates respectively.

“The balance between new variant spread and associated increased transmission and the scale-up of vaccination in our most likely scenario suggests continued declines in daily deaths through to June 1,” the institute said, according to CNN.
“By June 1, 2021, we project that 123,600 lives will be saved by the projected vaccine rollout.”

NSW Health officials have stepped up hotel quarantine testing procedures despite the state bringing up its 20th straight day without a positive case.

The zero local case result came after 12,521 tests in 24 hours, with an additional two cases also detected in returning international travellers.

NSW Health said they would be ramping up checks on people after they left hotel quarantine and asking them to get tested two days after they departed.

Contact tracers will call the returned traveller 48 hours after their quarantine period ends and ask them to attend their local testing clinic.

Authorities are also targeting people who have recently been in Victoria.

Non-NSW residents who have visited the public exposure sites listed by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services are banned from entering the state.

“NSW Health continues to urge people to come forward for testing with even the mildest of cold-like symptoms that could signal COVID-19, such as a sore throat, cough, fever or runny nose,” NSW Health said.

“After testing, you must remain in isolation until a negative result is received.”

Fives cases of coronavirus in New Zealand are now linked to Auckland's Pullman hotel.

A fourth person released from the isolation facility has tested positive, leaving New Zealand health authorities baffled given they had previously returned three negative cases.

Three others from the hotel returned positive cases last month, with another having caught the infection from one of the returnees.

The individual confirmed today had been self-isolating at their home in Hamilton, in the North Island, since leaving the hotel on January 30.

The person lives with two other people, who are being treated as close contacts. Both have returned negative results.

New Zealand's director of public health, Caroline McElnay, today conceded health officials were "scratching their heads" over the case, adding that investigations were still underway.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the individual had crossed paths with three other positive cases from the hotel, the most recent of whom left on January 15. That person had stayed on the same floor as today's confirmed case.

McElnay said the ministry was still looking into the spread.

"We haven't ruled out any possibilities," she said, adding: "We are scratching our heads a little."

As it stands, everyone who emerges from isolation at the Pullman is required to self-isolate for a further five days at home.

Today's case was in their fifth day of isolation.

WA Health Minister Roger Cook has announced the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine are expected to arrive in the state from February 22 "for immediate distribution".

"It is anticipated that medical teams from the PCH vaccination hub will vaccinate high risk staff at quarantine hotels and international, the international airport with the first available vaccines," he told reporters.

"This is to tackle the greatest potential threat head-on. We will be protecting our front-line workers from international arrivals, who bring the disease into Western Australia.

"Those to be offered the state administered vaccine, pending vaccine quantities and supply to be confirmed by the Australian government, include quarantine hotel workers, including hotel staff, police, security and medical support.

"International airport workers are face-to-face contact with travellers, security and clinical staff at the international airport.

"Transport staff involved in flight crew and quarantine hotel transfers, defined staff at sea ports who board and spend times on vessels and emergency and ward staff at Fiona Stanley and Royal Perth hospitals who receive and treat the bulk of the international arrivals.

"WA Health will be responsible for vaccinating quarantined international border word workers and at-risk front-line healthcare workers."

Mr McGowan has also commented on the Federal Government's vaccine rollout plan, confirming his state will start vaccinating their first group of people at the end of the month.

"The first groups of people to be vaccinated have been prioritised based on the federal model of those at increased risk of developing severe disease, or those at higher risk of being exposed to infected people, becoming infected and transmitting it to others" the Premier said.

"Among the first eligible in WA will be quarantine and national border workers, high risk frontline healthcare staff, and staff and residents of aged and disability care facilities."

WA will receive 10,000 vaccine doses initially.

It's a donut day for Australia, with no new locally-transmitted cases of COVID-19 reported in Western Australia.

The state also reported no new virus cases in returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

Premier Mark McGowan told reporters this afternoon that the transition last night from lockdown to eased restrictions was "relatively straightforward and shows people have been listening to instructions and follow the basic health advice".

"My thanks go to everyone for their cooperation for the last five days. Everyone played an important role in testing, heeding the advice and doing the right thing, including staying home," Mr McGowan.

"That has helped get us where we are today."
