'I'll definitely be having it': This Aussie nurse in London could be among the first to get the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine - ABC News

As an intensive care nurse working with COVID-19 patients in London, Australian Melissa Purcell is at high risk of infection.

In fact, she caught the virus earlier this year.

"I have some antibodies … but you don't know how long they'll last … or whether it will protect you," she told the ABC.

As a frontline health worker, she could be among those prioritised for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that began its rollout across Britain on Tuesday.

Ms Purcell hasn't been told when she'll get her jab, but says she will readily accept the offer.

"I'll definitely be having it," she said.

When she first heard the Pfizer vaccine had been approved, she had some concerns and worried whether the process had been rushed.

"[I] could be one of the first people to get it and what if there's effects?" she said.

However, after researching the trials, which involved more than 40,000 participants, Ms Purcell was reassured.

"It's … like the whole world coming together to achieve something so I guess that's why it happened so quickly," she said.

"I would trust the government to do rigorous checks."

'My colleagues can go home to their families feeling safer'

Ms Purcell said it had been a tough year working on COVID wards, where some families had to say goodbye to their loved ones via video calls.

"It's hard to see really young people — some people in their 20s — not make it," she said.

While she wears multiple layers of protective gear, the 29-year-old nurse said there were still risks involved.

"Sometimes, something happens when you're in a COVID bay, and you feel like you've been exposed … and you kind of go home that day a little bit nervous," she said.

She said the vaccine would change all that.

"We can be more confident and … my colleagues can go home to their families feeling safer."

'Fingers crossed'

At age 92, Londoner Kathleen Briley is in the age range to be offered one of the first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and she will take up the offer once it comes.

"I'm in line for it, yeah — (will) probably have it in my Christmas box," she joked.

After nearly nine months of recurring lockdowns, she was "fed up" with being trapped inside and hoped the arrival of vaccines would bring that to an end.

"Well, you are a little bit iffy but then it's either pot luck I think. I mean, I have had things (vaccines) before, and they've done me well, so just fingers crossed," she said.

"I've got a friend that is going this Friday to St Thomas's (hospital) … she phoned me and asked what I thought, and her son in America has told his mum to go for it."

But despite the vaccine's approval by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency, some remain unconvinced it is safe.

Stephen Lindsay told the ABC he loved to travel and was worried he would not be allowed into other countries if he does not accept the vaccine. But he was hesitant to do so.

"It's a bit too new, and I just don't trust it," he said.

"If I'm going to go, I'm going to go — I'd just rather go by natural causes. If the COVID is going to take my life, then it takes my life."

The Australian Government has said the emergency approval of a COVID-19 vaccine in Britain was an "important step for the world" but vaccinations against coronavirus in Australia would not start until March 2021.
