US election live updates: Trump campaign pays $US3 million for partial Wisconsin recount as Nancy Pelosi firms up next term - ABC News

Jumping over to Congress for a second, and Nancy Pelosi has all-but secured the House Speakership for another two years.

She was elected unopposed as the Democratic nominee for the position. The House will vote and officially choose the Speaker in January, but with a firm grip on her Democratic majority (albeit a slimmed down one after these elections), Pelosi is pretty much guaranteed to win the gig.

If she's elected in January, it'll be a fourth term (eight years) for Pelosi in one of the most powerful positions in the US government, and second-in line to the presidency.

In 2018 she promised to limit her Speakership to four more years, meaning this term would be her last.

“I don't want to limit any leverage I may have, but I made the statement,” Pelosi, 80, told reporters when asked about that promise today. She stopped short of explicitly saying these would be her final two years in the post.
