Senate Republicans have confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States, overpowering Democratic opposition to secure President Donald Trump's nominee a week before Election Day — and likely locking in a conservative court majority for years to come.
Mr Trump's choice to fill the vacancy of the late liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg potentially opens a new era of rulings on abortion, the Affordable Care Act and even a potential dispute over his own election.
Democratic senators were unable to stop today's outcome, Mr Trump's third justice to the court, as Republicans raced to reshape the judiciary.
Today's 52-48 confirmation vote was the closest ever held before a presidential election, and the first in modern times with no support from the minority party.
