Glasgow stabbing: Police officer stabbed in ‘major incident’ -

A police officer has been stabbed and a man shot by police during a major incident in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

The Scottish Police Federation said in a tweet that it appreciates families of police officers in Glasgow will be anxious to hear the news but that the family of the officer has been “notified and is being supported by the service.”

There is a heavy police presence on West George Street with more than a dozen police vehicles in attendance.

The BBC reported three people are believed to have died.

Greater Glasgow Police said the situation is “contained at this time and there is no danger to the general public.”

According to Sky News, there have been a number of people stabbed and that shots were fired. One eyewitness tweeted that at least seven people had been taken out of a building on stretchers.

Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson urged people to avoid the area.

He said: “Armed police officers attended the incident and I can confirm that a male suspect was shot by an armed officer.

“I would like to reassure the public that at this time we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident.

“I can also confirm that a police officer was injured while dealing with the incident and that officer is receiving treatment in hospital.”

Images on social media appear to show armed police entering a building and a large number of emergency vehicles outside.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the reports are “truly dreadful” and that she is being updated.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was “deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow” and that his thoughts are with “all the victims and their families.”
